Hum Charagon Ki Tarah Shaam Se Jal Jaate Hain

(Hum Charagon Ki Tarah Shaam Se Jal Jaate Hain) - Like Lamps I Too From Evening Burns in Fire - Qateel Shifai

This ghazal from Qateel Shifai is a love longing ghazal. The lover is burning in the flames of unfulfilled love which is eating him from the inside. This ghazal whose shair (couplet) are famous in popular culture is translated by me here. You can visit 'Hum Charagon Ki Tarah' for better understanding of this ghazal.

Garmi-ae-Hasrat-ae-Nakaam Se Jal Jaate Hain,
Hum Charagon Ki Tarah Shaam Se Jal Jaate Hain.

I burn in the flames of unfulfilled desire,
like lamps I too from evening burns in fire.

Shama Jis Aag Mein Jalti Hai Numaish Ke Liye,
Hum Usi Aag Mein Gumnaam Se Jal Jaate Hain.

In that fire in which a candle burns for exhibition,
I burn in that fire without any description.

Bach Nikalte Hai Agar Aatish-ae-Sayyal Se Hum,
Shola-Ae-Aariz-Ae-Gulfaam Se Jal Jaate Hain.

If I ever escape from the fire of the wine,
In the flames of beautiful flowers I confine.

Khud Numai To Nahin Shova-ae-Arbab-ae-Wafa,
Jinko Jalna Hai Wo Aaram Se Jal Jaate Hain.

Self display is not the habit of those who are loyal,
those who want to burn quietly give the trial.

Rabt-ae-Baham Pe Hamein Kya Na Kahenge Dushman,
Aashna Jab Tere Paigham Se Jal Jaate Hain.

Why will enemies not jealous on our mutual relationship?
When even friends get offended on letters of courtship.

Jab Bhi Aata Hai Tera Naam Mere Naam Ke Saath,
Jaane Kyun Log Mere Naam Se Jal Jaate Hain.

Whenever your name comes with my name,
don't know why people burn with jealousy from my name.

Here is the rendition of this ghazal in the voice of Mehndi Hasan :

Aarzuen Hazaar Rakhte Hain

( Aarzuen Hazaar Rakhte Hain!) I Keep A Thousand Desire - Mir Taqi Mir

In this ghazal Mir Taqi 'Mir' expressing his desires as a young lover. It seems that he is not pointing towards a particular beloved but talking in general about girls of his age and his desire to love them.
He keeps his heart restless for them and hope for a glance of love. He emphasis that he didn't want status of a friend but of a lover. He said that he is young and can influence to love.

Aarzuen Hazaar Rakhte Hain,
To Bhi Hum Dil Ko Maar Rakhte Hain.

I keep a thousand desire,

yet I suppress my heart's fire.

Bark Kam-Hausla Hain Hum Bhi To,
Dil Ko Bekaraar Rakhte Hain.

Like a lightening, I am unambitious,
thus keeping the heart impetuous.
Gair Hi Mureed-E-Inayat Hai,
Hum Bhi To Tumse Pyaar Rakhte Hain.

Only a stranger is liable of reward,
While I too love you die-hard.

Na Nigaah Ne Pyaam Ne Wada,
Naam Ko Hum Bhi Yaar Rakhte Hain.

Neither a glance,nor message,no promise,
For name, to me as a friend you keeps.

Hum Se Khush-Zamzama Kahan Yun To,
Lab-O-Lahza Hazaar Rakhte Hain.

Where is a happy song like me,

I have thousands style of accent in me.

Chotte Dil Ke Hain Butan Mashoor,
Bas Yahi Etbaar Rakhte Hain.

'Thieves of heart' beloved are famous,

that faith I only caress.

Phir Bhi Karte Hain 'Mir' Sahab Ishq,
Hain Jawan Ikhtiyaar Rakhte Hain.

Even then Mr. 'Mir' loves,

He is young, he influences.

Hungama Hai Kyun Barpa ?

हंगामा है क्यूँ बरपा?( Why Is This Chaos?)- Akbar Allahabadi

This Ghazal was written by Akbar Allahabadi during the time of Hindi-Muslim conflict. Since he was advocating Hindu-Muslim unity claiming that conflicts were part of Britishers Divide and Rule policy, some Muslim fanatics taunted that he had been given alcohol by the Hindus (Muslims are forbidden to drink alcohol). This Ghazal was his response to those insinuations. Thus this ghazal has a broader sense than about the pleasure of imbibing alcohol.

Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa, Thodi Si Jo Pii Lii Hai
Daakaa Toh Nahin Daalaa Chori Toh Nahi Kii Hai

Why is this chaos growing for my slight drinking,
I haven't committed any robbery, nor indulged in stealing.

Naa Tajurbakaari Se Vaais Kii Ye Baatein Hai
Is Rang Ko Kyaa Jaane Puchho Toh Kabhi Pii Hai

In inexperienced way religious preacher is talking,
How he knows this color without ever indulging in drinking.

Us Mai Se Nahi Matlab, Dil Jis se Hai Begaanaa
Maqasudd Hai Us Mai Se Dil Hii Mein Jo Khinchati Hai

That wine is useless to which heart is not relating,
Which penetrates into heart, that wine is worth desiring.

Vaan Dil Mein Ki Sadame Do Yaan Jee Mein Ke Sab Sah Lo
Unkaa Bhi Ajab Dil Hai Mera Bhi Ajab Jee Hai

There they wants to give shocks, here I am ready for accepting,
Their heart is also strange, mine also is interesting.

Har Zarra Chamaktaa Hai Anwaar-e-Ilaahi Se
Har Saans Ye Kehati Hai Hum Hai To Khuda Bhi Hai

From grace of god, every shred is shining,
Every breath says that If we exists then God is also existing.

Suraj Mein Lage Dhabba Fitrat ke Karishme hain
But Hum ko Kahein Kaafir Allah Ki Marzi Hai

It's nature's miracle that sun is blemishing,
Pagans calling me infidel is what Allah is willing.

KHWAHISH(Desire)

(Desire)

image from:http://www.jonathanrosenbaum.com

I refuse to die in a desire to meet you,
you don't come, even when my condition you knew.

Why you pass smiling, when there was no love,
to glimpse like that there is no pressure above.

If you wanted to play than why from my heart?
You were not what I desire, than why a start?

Now I will die,if you not appear for me,
I will be doomed for ignorance of my plea.

Why all sufferings are for me destined,
when for you so many lovers are lined.

I am alive to hear a news from you,
Perhaps in after life, you have a different view.
