The last sher (couplet) of this Ghazal by Akbar Allahabadi is very famous and often quoted in movies and routine conversations. This ghazal is a display of love and lament. He said that mere meeting eyes with her sparkle many emotions in him. He further praises her beloved and prays to god to keep away from love. In the last stanza he explains his pain that even her huge crimes get unnoticed (like leaving her lovers to die) while his mere sigh of love defamed him. ग़म्ज़ा नहीं होता की इशारा नहीं होता,

आँख उनसे जो मिलती है तो क्या-क्या नहीं होता।

Gamza Nahin Hota Ki Ishara Nahin Hota,

Aankh Unse Jo Milti Hai To Kya-Kya Nahin Hota.

Not only secret hints and coquetry glance,

meeting eyes with her creates multiple instance.

जलवा न हो मानी का तो सूरत का असर क्या,

बुलबुल गुल-ए-तस्वीर का शैदा नहीं होता। 

Jalwa Na Ho Mani Ka To Surat Ka Asar Kya,

Bulbul Gul-e-Tasveer Ka Shaida Nahin Hota.

If splendor is meaningless face has no effect,

a nightingale to the portrait of a flower is not attached.

अल्लाह बचाए मरज़-ए-इश्क़ से दिल को,

सुनते हैं कि ये आरिज़ा अच्छा नहीं होता। 

Allah Bachai Marz-e-Ishq Se Dil Ko,

Sunte Hain Ki Ye Aariza Achcha Nahin Hota.

God save the heart from love's ailment,

I have heard that this disease is not correct.

 

तस्बीह तिरे चेहरे को क्या दूँ गुल-ए-तर से,

होता है शगुफ्ता मगर इतना नहीं होता। 

Tasbih Tire Chehre Ko Kya Dun Gul-e-Tar Se,

Hota Hai Shagufta Magar Itna Nahin Hota.

How I compare your face with a moist flower,

It is cheerful but not of that much power.

मैं नज़अ में हूँ आएं तो एहसान है उनका,

लेकिन ये समझ लें कि तमाशा नहीं होता।

Mein Naaza Mein Hun Aayein To Ehsaan Hai Unka,

Lekin Ye Samajh Lein Ki Tamasha Nahin Hota.

I am on death-bed,it's her kindness if she wish to come,

but she must understand it's not an exhibition to welcome.

हम आह भी करते हैं तो हो जाते हैं बदनाम,

वो क़त्ल भी करते हैं तो चर्चा नहीं होता।  

Hum Aah Bhi Karte Hain To Ho Jaate Hain Badnaam,

Wo Katl Bhi Karte Hain To Charcha Nahin Hota.

My mere sighs defame me,my reputation get crushed

while even her murder was not debated and discussed.
