शायरी # 12 (Couplets) - Faiz Ahmad Faiz 

Faiz Ahmad Faiz is known for his revolutionary and love ghazals. Both shers(couplets)translated here are for hope. Hope that something better will come after sorrows, hope that someone you are longing for will come sooner or later. I hope you will like his couplets and my efforts at translation. 



दिल न-उम्मीद तो नहीं नाकाम ही तो है,
लम्बी है ग़म की शाम मगर शाम ही तो है। 
Dil Na-Ummeed To Nahin Nakam Hi To Hai,
Lambi Hai Gham Ki Shaam Magar Shaam Hi To Hai.

Heart is only disappointed, it has not failed, 
Evening of sorrow is longer but it's only an evening.

वो आ रहे हैं, वो आते हैं, आ रहें होंगे,
शब-ए-फ़िराक ये कह कर गुज़ार दी हमने। 
Wo Aa Rahein Hain, Wo Aate Hain, Aa Rahein Honge,
Shab-e-Firaq Ye Keh Kar Guzar Di Humne.

She is coming, she comes, she will come,
Night of separation passed by saying this.

The Seven Stages Of Love(इश्क़ के सात मक़ाम) Arabic literature and sufi traditions describes seven stages of love and after the movie 'Dedh Ishqiya'  all of us also knew that these seven stages of love are दिलकशी (Attraction),उन्स (Attachment),मोहब्बत (Love),अक़ीदत (Trust/Reverence),इबादत (Worship),जूनून (Madness) and मौत (Death) . At this time of the year ( Valentine Week) when the   Love is in the air    I am sharing my couplets (शेर ) which are based on these seven stages of love written at different times. Na Muhn Chupa Ke Jiye Hum Na Sar Jhuka Ke Jiye

न मुहँ छुपा के जीए हम न सर झुका के जीए। (Na Muhn Chupa Ki Jiye Hum Na Sar Jhuka Ke Jiye) -  I am sharing here a ' Qita ' written by Sahir Ludhianvi which is recently used in Hindi movie 'Sanju '. A song inspired from it also penned by Sahir for the film ' Humraaz' (1967 ) staring Sunil Dutt in the lead role. Literal meaning of Qata is ‘separated’. Qata stands for a series of couplets in a ghazal having continuity of thought. A ghazal having one or more Qatas is called Qata-Band ghazal . Qatas also have independent existence comprising at least four lines. In a Qata , the second and fourth lines follow the same rhyming scheme. (Qita meaning from Rekhta ).
